Google takes a hit to make Android survive in the tablet market

A teardown of Google's Nexus 7 tablet by IHS shows that the company is barely breaking even on the 8GB model of tablet. The physical teardown found the 8 GB model to have a bill-of-materials of $159.25, while the 16 GB model comes in at $166.75. After factoring other costs, IHS estimates that Google is breaking even on the $199 8 GB model, while making around $42 profit on the $249 16 GB model.

"Google's Nexus 7 represents less of an attempt to compete with Apple Inc.'s market-leading iPad, and more of a bid to battle with Amazon's Kindle Fire," said IHS teardown services senior director Andrew Rassweiler.

"The two platforms are similar in many regards, including the use of the 7-inch display, the eschewing of 4G wireless connections in favor of Wi-Fi, support for virtually identical battery lives and the same pricing for the entry-level models. However, the Nexus 7 has superior specifications to the Kindle Fire, giving it a more attractive feature set that may make it more desirable to consumers."

The Nexus 7's bill-of-materials is a mere $18 higher than Amazon Kindle Fire, despite the huge bump in specs. It's also worth noting the profitable 16GB model of the Nexus 7 is the only version available through other retailers, while the 8GB model is sold exclusively through the Google Play Store.

Google has also begun shipping pre-orders of the Nexus 7 sold on the Google Play Store.

"Locked and loaded, ready to play: we've started shipping +Nexus 7 pre-orders today," said the company in a tweet today.

Mine arrived this morning (13/07) and I have to say, I'm very impressed for the money. If my kids want a tablet for Christmas this year, this is what they will get....depending on the price of the rumoured iPad mini. Tablet market is about to get very active.

Sadly, I'm still waiting for them to even ship mine.

Yep, ordered two and neither have shipped - my card hasn't even been charged for one of them yet, one ordered a couple of hours after pre-orders became possible. Google have really dropped the ball on this launch, especially if they become available in stores before those who pre-ordered get theirs.

@ Fran they're only available in stores for those who pre-ordered (or at least supposed to be).

This is really good.

I was shocked and stunned a week or two ago when I discovered the price. And I thought my Galaxy Note was an amazing piece of tech...

I've been playing with mine all day. As a previous owner of many Android phones, an iPod Touch, an Asus Transformer, and a sharer of friends' iPads, I've never been so happy with a smart device. From the form factor to the incredible responsiveness, customizability, and versatility, this is the tablet to own. I'm looking forward to seeing if iOS 6 can keep up, because this is a pretty big leap for Android. It's faster, smoother, and far more versatile (even the voice assistant vastly outpaces siri). Now if only Android had as robust an app market.

This is a game changer device for our industry. The Nexus 7 is sold out everywhere. And Google have made a right mess of not looking after those (me) who ordered directly from them.
Asus will have to ramp up production like crazy. This will certainly be the best selling tablet in the world this year if they can meet demand.
You have to think that this will be the final blow for the Playstation Vita. Compare the two side by side and the Vita is just a dinosaur device.
Google are not bothered about making a profit on the hardware. They want market share and Google Play users. They can afford to buy both.

Brilliant; there had to be some kind of comment like this in your post. Obviously the release of two totally different devices within six months of one another means that the one you don't have a vested interest in will crash and burn. It's all so black and white to you, isn't it Bruce?

@ Nicholas - after this, I certainly will never order direct from Google again. Amazing how amateurish they've been.
