Square Enix suing hackers
Lawsuit filed against fifteen unnamed Italians who copied and distributed preview code
Square Enix has filed a lawsuit against fifteen Italian hackers who downloaded and leaked a preview of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. It is seeking damages in excess of $5000.
Square Enix Limited v. Does 1-15 was filed in Washington on June 22, according to Patent Arcade and centres around a playable, ten hour piece of preview code made available to members of the press online.
The lawsuit states that the preview was made available to Italian consumer magazine GMC via a protected internet site, but that the unnamed hackers accessed the preview, copied it and leaked it on to the internet via file sharing sites. GMC had no knowledge of the breach.
The lawsuit claims copyright infringement, unlawful access to a protected computer as covered by the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, and seeks considerable damages and costs.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution is being developed by Eidos Montreal and will be released in late August.
