Sonic gets third film and live-action series

Live-action series to focus on Knuckles, voiced by Idris Elba

Sega CEO Haruki Satomi confirmed that Sonic the Hedgehog will be getting a third theatrical film.

In a message shared on Twitter, he also said that a live-action Sonic series for Paramount+ is in development.

Paramount clarified that the series will revolve around Knuckles, with Idris Elba reprising his role.

The second Sonic the Hedgehog movie is set to release this April following the success of the first film, which launched in 2020 featuring Ben Schwartz in the titular role and Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik.

As reported by Variety, Sonic the Hedgehog was the highest-grossing video game adaptation in North America, generating $319 million.

Haruki Satomi added: "We've got a remarkable partnership with Paramount, and we are excited to continue expanding the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise with them.

"2022 is shaping up to be a significant year for the franchise with the second film being released this April, as well as Sonic Frontiers, the highly anticipated video game title, coming this holiday. Sonic has been beloved by fans across the world for over 30 years and we look forward to continuing to bring memorable moments and experiences to them for many years to come."
