World War One: La Grande Guerre 14-18

Another dispatch from the front line to Tommy's mum.

Dear Mum,

Last night we finished digging out our section of the trenches. It was damn hard work and I’m sick with tiredness and hunger. Trenches have to be dug in the dark, you see, so we were up most of the night. I could hear the bullets whistling past me just above our heads. It doesn’t half put you on edge.

The trenches are unbelievably cold and muddy with water up to your shins in many places. The worst part has to be the lice – they never let up. We’ve been turning our shirts inside out to get rid of them, but they always find a way back in. The rats aren’t so bad, providing we can keep rations well hidden. You can hear them scuttling round your feet at night.

Word is that the big Boss has been pouring funds into research with the hope of us getting some new weapons. I can tell you we’d be glad to see some improvements on these machine guns. There have been whispers of an armoured vehicle too, but I suspect we won’t see this unless the Boss continues to finance its development.

They say when you go over the top, the infantry sergeant comes round with a measure of rum, for courage. We’re expecting the Boss to deploy our unit any day now and it’s filling us all with dread. I don’t want you to worry though, I say my prayers every night and hope for the best – no one can do any more than that.

With love to you all,

Tommy
