Wii and PS3 still neck and neck in Japan

Uncharted 2 becomes highest new entry in software charts

The status quo for hardware sales in Japan has been maintained for another week, with the Nintendo DS leading the PSP, but the PS3 outselling the Wii - albeit by a tiny margin.

Combined DS Lite and DSi sales dipped by almost 4,000 units on the previous week to 51,735. The PSP was still some way behind and down by 6,500 units to 33,508. The PS3 fell by a little over 500 units to 30,231, while the Wii fell by around the same to 29,965 units.

Although software sales were still relatively strong there were few major new entries this week, with combined results for Pokemon SoulSilver/HeartGold on DS easily leading the pack with 164,721 unit sales.

The rest of the top ten was largely unchanged from the previous week, except for two new entries - the first being Naughty Dog's Uncharted 2 on PS3 at number six. For a Western developed game in Japan the title did relatively well, with 53,827 unit sales.

The only other new entry was the Wii version of Okami at number six, with 23,810 unit sales. Developed by US studio Ready at Dawn, the Wii version of the game was released in the West in April/June but has only now been launched in Japan. The original PS2 game was developed by Capcom's now defunct Clover Studio and originally released in 2006.

Outside the top ten other new entries included Konami's dance game BeatMania IIDX 16: Empress + Premium Best on PS2 at number 11, Tecmo's PSP action game Undead Knights at number 12, 5pb's visual novel Steins;Gate on Xbox 360 at number 14 and Yuke's UFC 2009: Undisputed for PS3 at number 24.
