WarCraft III expansion sells a million

Blizzard's Reign of Chaos continues a year after the original game's release with news that expansion pack The Frozen Throne has sold more than a million units worldwide in just over a month.

WarCraft III expansion The Frozen Throne is sold more than one million copies worldwide, according to figures from developer Blizzard Entertainment, making it the company's eighth million-selling game. The Frozen Throne has been on sale for just over a month.

Blizzard president and co-founder Mike Morhaime said the firm was "very excited" about the demand for the strategy title, which provides a new chapter in the saga and lets players revisit the war-torn world of Azeroth.

"We put a lot of effort into giving players more of everything that WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos offered, in addition to a host of new features, and the expansion set's popularity tells us that our long hours and hard work have paid off."

Meanwhile, Bob McKenzie, director of merchandising for several US retail chains including GameSpot and Software Etc., described The Frozen Throne as "one of the largest PC expansion set releases for us since Diablo II: Lord of Destruction [another Blizzard title] in June 2001."

"From what we've seen with previous WarCraft products and other Blizzard games, we expect WarCraft III: The Frozen Throne to remain on the top-10 lists for some time to come," he added.

Of course this is hardly the first time that the WarCraft series has tasted success. Over eight million copies of WarCraft games have been sold since the series' debut in 1994, not counting the success of spin-off title StarCraft. WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos, released last year, topped one million units in a similar space of time.
