UK games industry "needs action now" - Tiga

Developer trade body responds to Ontario's tax break budget increase

Tiga CEO Richard Wilson has responded to the news that Ontario is significantly increasing its videogame business tax incentives by demanding action from the UK government in the forthcoming Budget statement.

"This demonstrates once again that other governments take their videogames industries seriously and back them with significant financial support," he told GamesIndustry.biz in relation to the release of details on Ontario's USD 100 million-plus scheme.

"If the UK Government wants to maintain its position as a major developer of videogames then Alistair Darling, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, must end the present policy of prevarication and announce a tax breaks for games production in his Budget on April 22nd. The UK videogames industry needs action and it needs it now."

Canada has already usurped the UK in the global videogames production rankings, with several industry watchers predicting that Britain could fall as low as sixth in the coming year as other country's governments show more and more support for their respective industries.
