Ubisoft addresses For Honor microtransaction concerns

Publisher "never had an intention" for players to unlock everything after consumers calculate $732 price tag

Ubisoft has responded to consumer concerns that accessing all content in its newest IP, For Honor, will be too costly or time-consuming.

Last week, one Reddit user estimated that it would take the average player two-and-a-half years to unlock all hero skins, outfits, emotes and other customisation options. Any users that don't have that much time to invest can purchase Steel, the game's in-game currency, but it would cost $732 to buy everything For Honor has to offer.

PC Gamer reports the game's director, Damin Kieken, has addressed this in the publisher's weekly livestream, clarifying that it doesn't expect players to want every single unlock.

"We never had an intention for you to unlock everything in the game," he said. "First, that doesn't truly make any sense. We applied RPG mechanics on top of a fighting game, in a PVP environment, but it's like in an RPG, like in World of Warcraft: you would never try to unlock everything for all the characters of the whole game. Same for any MOBA, you're not trying to unlock all the content for all the characters in the game."

He later added that Ubisoft expected most player to choose between one and three characters to focus on, and this has been seen across For Honor's userbase.

"The design is based around that," he explained. "The cosmetic items are really for us the end-game content: the things we want you to unlock after playing for several weeks."
