Shortlists announced for Golden Joystick awards

Dennis Publishing has announced the final shortlists for its annual Golden Joystick awards, with Grand Theft Auto Vice City and Soul Calibur II leading the pack with three and four nominations respectively.

Voting in the twelve open categories is now set to continue until November 21st, and with over 30,000 votes already cast - more than last year's total in its entirety - it's expected that the awards this year will represent the largest cross-section of consumer opinion yet.

Both Vice City and Soul Calibur II have been shortlisted in the Ultimate Game of the Year category, which they share with the likes of Metroid Prime, Pro Evolution Soccer 2, Knights of the Old Republic and Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker.

Other categories of interest include the Hardware of the Year section, which sees Sony's Eye Toy squaring up against Nintendo's GBA SP in a category which also features nominations for Xbox Live, the PS2 Network Adapter, and both NVIDIA and ATI's latest PC graphics offerings.

There are also categories for "Most Wanted Game for Xmas 2003" and "Most Anticipated Game for 2004" - although we note that on the awards website, Half-Life 2 seems to have remained in the Christmas games category. Wishful thinking, perhaps?

The awards ceremony will be held in London on November 28, and is being hosted by Phill Jupitus. MTV will be broadcasting highlights of the awards on its prime-time movies and games show, Screenplay, on December 5th.
