PSP tops Japan hardware chart

9 million mark looms for Sony handheld as sales for most consoles dip on a relatively quiet software week

The PlayStation Portable topped the hardware chart in Japan for the week ending April 13, according to the latest data from Media Create.

Sony's handheld console sold over 85,000 units, a drop of almost a third on the previous week, but still almost double that of the second-placed Nintendo DS on 47,000.

The Nintendo Wii was third, selling 46,000 units, while the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2 sold around 8000 and 7000 consoles respectively.

The Xbox 360 shifted just over 1000 new consoles across the week which saw the PlayStation 3 break the 2 million barrier, while the PSP is expected to top 9 million by the time this week's sales figures are released next week.

The chart is as follows:

  • 1. PlayStation Portable (85,721)
  • 2. Nintendo DS (47,158)

  • 4. PlayStation 3 (8232)
