PopCap's Plants vs Zombies becomes top-grossing iPhone launch

Game makes $1m in 9 days; Bejeweled 2 hits 3m sales

PopCap's Plant vs Zombies has become the highest grossing launch on iPhone and iPod Touch to date, having sold over 300,000 units in its first nine days on sale.

Selling at $2.99, the PC game adaptation grossed over $1 million during its opening week and a half. It went to number one in the App Store chart within 24 hours, remaining there until yeserday.

"Plants vs Zombies is our latest major franchise to make the jump to iPhone, and from the early customer and critical feedback it appears to be a great adaptation of the game," said Andrew Stein, director of mobile business development at PopCap.

"There's always a concern when bringing a computer game to a mobile, pocket-sized device that something will get lost in the process, but in this case the overwhelming consensus is that Plants vs Zombies is even more fun on the smaller touch screen."

PopCap also revealed that its flagship Bejeweled 2 has set a new record. The game, it says, has become the first paid app to reach 3 million units in the App Store.

The casual games company now boasts three games that have reached number one in the store - along with the two aforementioned titles, Peggle has also topped the App Store chart.
