PlayStation 3 game sales climb to 47m in Q3

But software sales across combined PlayStation formats expected to drop for full year

Sales of PlayStation 3 software reached 47.6 million units globally in the third quarter ended December 31, 2009, up from the 40.8 million units for the same period last year.

As previously reported, PlayStation 3 hardware units were 6.5 million for the period, with the company on track to sell 13 million PlayStation 3's by the end of March, up from the 10.1 million units sold during the last financial year.

Sales of PlayStation Portable software were down 500,000 units on last year, to 15 million games, while PlayStation 2 software fell from 29.7 million to 11.2 million games.

With a decrease in PSP and PS2 hardware, the company expects to sell a total of 200 million games across all three PlayStation brands by March, down from the 237.5 million in the previous year. The company did not estimate individual formats.
