New Xbox budget line sees top titles relaunched at $9.99

Microsoft has announced that it is to create a new budget price point for selected Xbox titles in North America, with a selection of the Platinum Hits line being repackaged as Best Of Platinum Hits, and reduced from $19.99 to $9.99.

16 games, many of them counted amongst the best-sellers on the platform, will be included in the initial line-up for this range - which is the cheapest budget range ever to be launched by a platform holder.

The titles appearing on the system include first-party games such as Counter-Strike, Project Gotham Racing 2 and Fuzion Frenzy, as well as third-party games including Splinter Cell (and its sequel, Pandora Tomorrow), Morrowind, MechAssault, Soul Calibur II, True Crime: Streets of LA, and both Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 and Tony Hawk's Underground.

It's not clear at present whether Microsoft will be manufacturing new units of the games in the range for sale, or if the new budget price point is aimed at clearing stock of old Xbox games off shelves to make way for Xbox 360 titles.

At present, Microsoft has announced no plans for any similar range territories outside North America.
