Apple, the BBC and Shazam among the victorious.
Friday 2nd October/... Apple, BBC and Shazam were among the winners of the fourth annual ME Awards last night, with a special award going to Hungama Mobile's Neeraj Roy.
The ceremony, which rewards innovation and creativity in the mobile content sector, took place at the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington, London. It attracted delegates from over 120 companies in media, technology and entertainment around the world. The awards recognised achievement in the following categories: development and publishing; services; handsets and operators.
It was a great night for Apple, which retained the Best Handset Company award, and for Flirtomatic, Shazam and Admob, all of which retained their awards from the 2008 event. First time winners included PlayPhone, Vodafone, Universal Music, Saffron Digital and others.
But the loudest applause of the evening went to Neeraj Roy, who became the fourth winner of the 'Outstanding Contribution to Mobile Entertainment' award. He received his prize for building India's biggest content company, and for his energy in promoting the industry all over the world.
Reflecting back on a memorable evening, Tim Green, executive editor of Mobile Entertainment magazine, said: “The ME Awards event is a chance for the mobile content business to celebrate its amazing progress into the mainstream. And with the whole world obsessed with apps and widgets, it really feels like the industry is at the centre of things. Congratulations to all the winners.”
