LOGIN 2009 Conference

Halting State author Charlie Stross to give keynote address at May's event in Seattle.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SEATTLE, Washington, January 14, 2009 - Evergreen Events is delighted to announce the first keynote speaker for the 2009 LOGIN Conference. Charlie Stross, the award-winning author of the book Halting State, is scheduled as the May 13th keynote speaker. The acclaimed thriller Halting State is part of an accomplished body of written which contemplates the social and technological ramifications of virtual world life. Mr. Stross' inimitable and thoughtful perspective on virtual worlds can be expected to both entertain and enlighten LOGIN attendees.

The 2009 LOGIN Conference will be held May 11th-14th 2009 in Seattle, Washington at the fantastic Seattle Marriott Waterfront Hotel. LOGIN amasses three years of feedback from community and an industry-leading advisory board to create an innovative event designed to facilitate education, networking, and entertainment for leaders of the business and development online game industry.

"When we were brainstorming ideas for keynote speakers," related Peter Freese, LOGIN Conference Director, "Charlie Stross' name was on the tips of the tongues of everyone who recently read Halting State or Accelerando. Charlie is the kind of visionary writer who makes revolutionary concepts seem both satisfyingly obvious and tantalizingly imminent. His ideas spark wildfires of creativity in the minds of his readers, and one is left reeling in potentialities. I can't think of a more fitting and inspiring speaker to ally with the forward-looking LOGIN Conference."

Charles Stross is the Hugo award winning author of Halting State ("The first couple of pages had me hooked, and I didn't touch another book until I finished it" — John Carmack) and a dozen other science fiction novels. A resident of Edinburgh, Scotland, he writes full time, with a focus on the near-future consequences of information technology. In a previous life he was Linux columnist for the British magazine Computer Shopper, and first software developer at Datacash Ltd, back in the early dot-com era.

His most relevant novels include Accelerando (2005), Halting State (2007) and 419 (forthcoming in 2010). He's also collaborating on a novel with Cory Doctorow.

Raph Koster, President at Metaplace, Inc., proclaimed, "Charles Stross is both a visionary science fiction writer, and a savvy observer of technological trends. His novel "Halting State" is the clearest depiction of where virtual worlds are headed over the next decade."

Brandon Reinhart, Programmer at Valve Software, agreed. "Charlie Stross is one of the most creative science-fiction authors today. Tackling popular subjects in futurism such as nanotechnology, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence, Stross paints both uplifting and disturbing pictures of what the world might look like by the end of the decade. Mr. Stross has recently explored the world of online games development and the near future economy in Halting State. The fan in me says he is awesome and his books are about as much fun as you can have offline."
