Konami sales down on lack of Metal Gear release

Home consoles, arcade, health businesses down, casino division up in nine month results

Sales in Konami's videogame business were down for the nine months to December 31, due to tough comparisons to last year's Metal Gear Solid release.

Revenues for home console division were down 32.5 per cent to ¥100.4 billion (£700.5m / $1.1bn), compared to ¥148.7 billion (£1.03bn / $1.6bn) for the same period last year.

"Although there were temporary signs of recovery from the ongoing economic slowdown from the previous year, the business environment surrounding the Konami Corporation and its subsidiaries continued to be uncertain. This was due to factors such as the impact of the appreciation of the yen and deflation," said the company.

"Turnover in home videogame software and arcade games, however, has declined in comparison to the same period of the previous year, which was marked by the release of major game titles."

The company released PES 2010 and SAW globally, and Pen 1 Grand Prix: A Penguin's Troubles Special, Tokimeki Memorial 4 and Loveplus in Japan, during the period.

Profit for the entire Konami business, which includes Health & Fitness, casino hardware, and arcade operations in the Digital Entertainment division, was down 18.4 per cent to ¥190.1 billion (£1.3bn / $2.1bn), while operating income fell 50.6 per cent to ¥17.1 billion (£119.4m / $189.1m).
