John Davison appointment

Now VP of content at GamePro Media.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, October 6, 2009 – A 20-year veteran of the video games media industry, John Davison, has been appointed executive vice president of content at GamePro Media, publisher of GamePro Magazine and GamePro.com, effective immediately.

Davison was most recently the co-founder and president of What They Like, Inc., best known for the Web’s definitive family guide to interactive entertainment, What They Play ( www.whattheyplay.com). Davison assisted in the overall operation of the company and provided the editorial vision for What They Play, which launched in 2007 and was a Webby Award Honoree in both 2008 and 2009 and a winner of the Parents’ Choice Gold award. What They Play was acquired by IGN Entertainment in September.

“GamePro presents a tremendous opportunity,” said Davison. “We have the chance to celebrate the 20th anniversary of this significant marque with some exciting editorial changes, and to reshape it as a thoroughly modern integrated media brand.”

In addition to celebrating two decades of success this past spring GamePro Media continues to pursue an aggressive growth plan throughout 2009 and beyond, with numerous online media initiatives to deepen consumer engagement and create new opportunities for advertisers. Among its efforts, its partnership with sister company, IDG TechNetwork, represents a significant step toward building a boutique online network of sites. Announced only recently, GamePro Media Network already engages 7.6 million gamers per month, in addition to a point-of-purchase marketing relationship with 7- Eleven that puts the GamePro brand in front of 6 million consumers each day at stores across the United States.

“John is an outstanding choice to advance the editorial mission of GamePro Media,” said Marci Yamaguchi Hughes, president, GamePro Media. “He is an executive with a proven track record of making an editorial vision a reality. With John as part of the GamePro family, we know that we will continue to maintain our leadership position and remain top-of-mind for millions of gamers in an ever-changing, multi-platform media landscape.”

Prior to What They Like, Davison was the senior vice president in charge of content for the Ziff Davis Media Game Group, where he oversaw all of the company’s online and print content, including the 1UP Network of sites; 1UP.com, Gamevideos.com, MyCheats.com, Gametab.com and FileFront, as well as Electronic Gaming Monthly Magazine and Computer Gaming World. Davison is an authority on video games, who has appeared on The Today Show, and is frequently quoted in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, and the Associated Press.
