Indie Open House project

Fundraising drive for Babycastles indie game arcade a success.

MEDIA ALERT

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - Oct. 7, 2010 - IGN Entertainment, Inc., today revealed that community support and its matching donation to New York-based indie video game arcade Babycastles helped to exceed goals for the not-for-profit's fundraiser by more than 100 percent. In total, nearly $13,000 was raised to help support the indie arcade's upcoming games exhibition, beating its goal of raising $6,000 during the campaign. IGN Entertainment provided nearly $3,800 of the total raised by matching community donations made during the fundraiser.

"It's mind-blowing to receive the amount of support we've gotten from the community, and IGN in particular, towards establishing a social culture for independent video games in New York City," said Kunal Gupta, organizer of Babycastles Arcade. "This incredible financial support is evidence that independent video games arcades can become a long-standing part of our future!"

Babycastles is a collaborative project between the arcade and Showpaper, a New York-based bi-weekly print publication that promotes all-ages and DIY music shows in the area. Showpaper will assist in music production and also curate rotating exhibitions of artwork alongside each arcade lineup running from October 8 through December 29, 2010. Thanks to the support of the games community, the Manhattan Babycastles location will be able to offer free admission during the day, acting as an art gallery for indie games, while at night, Babycastles will host events such as lectures, performances, workshops and game release parties.

IGN Open House Submission Deadline Looms

In addition to supporting the indie community through fundraising efforts like Babycastles, IGN Entertainment is also helping independent game developers through its Indie Open House project, which includes a free residency and dedicated office space inside IGN's offices in the heart of San Francisco. Participating game teams will also be granted exclusive demo days, free licenses to valuable online gaming technology, professional consultation, technical support, advice on distribution strategy and much more. IGN maintains no interest in owning any content or binding participating teams to prohibitive contracts. The deadline for application is 11:59 pm on October 10, 2010.
