GameDuell pivots, cuts 25 per cent of staff

German developer shifts focus towards cross-platform card and board games

GameDuell has cut around 25 per cent of its 205 staff as it refocuses its core business around multiplayer card and board games.

The layoffs will mostly impact the Berlin based developer's casual arcade team, which discovered that its "hit-driven" target market had become, "extremely competitive." An official statement released by the company today indicated that it is helping those affected by the cuts to find, "adequate new career opportunities."

"We feel that we can achieve more for our community of players by focusing on the areas where we are one of the market leaders," said CEO Kai Bolik in a statement. "As part of our strategy, we will now focus on our core strengths in developing and operating community games and utilising our cross-platform technology. In this field, we have a healthy business with a proven track record of 13 years."

Specifically, that means card and board games played by users across mobile, Facebook and the web, using an infrastructure that the company, "has built up over the recent 24 months." GameDuell will continue to develop games of this type, as well as expanding the GameDuell.com web platform.
