Festival of Games 2010

UTRECHT, The Netherlands – February 9, 2010 – The NLGD foundation today announced that industry icon David Perry will deliver a keynote speech during the 2010 Festival of Games. Perry is the founder of GAIKAI, a company that will launch a new form of gaming this year. He also founded Shiny Entertainment, and designed such classics games as Earthworm Jim, MDK and The Matrix.

At the conference, Perry will not only demonstrate the streaming game technology, which will launch in 2010, and share his vision on the future of gaming. GAIKAI’s technology allows games to be streamed from a server via the internet into peoples’ homes. This does away with installing software locally, and even makes upgrades to user hardware a thing of the past. Even graphical intensive titles such as Grand Theft Auto IV are playable on any system with an internet browser.

“It is incredibly important for developers and publishers, to create new methods of distribution,” said Matthijs Dierckx-Kuijper, publisher of industry magazine Control, co-organisers of the conference. “GAIKAI is a very interesting new platform and we believe David Perry will give a great talk on the future of gaming and this new technology..”

Seth van der Meer, chairman of the Stichting Nederlandse Gamedagen, organizer of the Festival of Games said, “Having David Perry as a keynote speaker shows that we are elevating this conference to a whole new level. We have a prominent place for new technology that has a tremendous impact on the gaming industry.”

The conference will not only look at the future, but also at past successes. Eric Bartelson, editor-in-chief of Control commented, “We have already announced the attendance of Ian Livingstone, who will speak about the success story of Eidos and the Tomb Raider franchise. But we also have another surprise which we will probably announce next week. What I can say is it is someone I’m sure developers will love to see in person.”

The Festival of Games is a combination of several game-related events, aimed at developers, publishers and investors in the gaming industry. The conference happens alongside an international matchmaking event, an exposition, a career fair and a section where up and coming talent can show their skills.

The program for this year has been created in co-operation with Control, the magazine for the games industry in the Netherlands. Publisher Matthijs Dierckx-Kuijper and E ditor-in-Chief Eric Bartelson are responsible for the impressive list of speakers who will attend.

The Festival of Games takes place June 3-4, at the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht. Grote man achter nieuwe gamestechniek op congres in Nederland:

David Perry keynote speaker op het Festival of Games 2010

Industrie-icoon David Perry geeft een keynote speech tijdens het Festival of Games 2010. Perry is de grote man achter GAIKAI, het bedrijf dit jaar een nieuwe manier van gamen lanceert. Perry is tevens de oprichter van Shiny Entertainment en ontwierp enkele grote titels als Earthworm Jim, MDK en de Matrix-games.

GAIKAI heeft een techniek ontwikkeld waarbij games niet meer draaien op een computer of console thuis, maar op een server vanwaar beeld en geluid via internet naar de ontvanger worden gestuurd. Het installeren van games wordt overbodig, complete spellen, dus ook grote 3D-games als Grand Theft Auto VI, kunnen vanuit een internetbrowser zo worden gestart.

David Perry lanceert de nieuwe techniek later dit jaar. Deze zal in de eerste fase nog beperkt beschikbaar zijn. Tijdens het congres komt hij niet alleen het streaming gaming tonen, maar spreekt tevens over zijn visie op de toekomst op de gamesindustrie.

“Voor developers en publishers is de ontwikkeling van nieuwe technologie om publiek te bereiken - nieuwe distributiemethodes - ongelooflijk belangrijk. En dus interessant. We zijn daarom erg trots de voorman van het bedrijf dat dit jaar de grootste innovatie van de gamesindustrie lanceert, als keynote spreker aan te kondigen”, aldus Matthijs Dierckx-Kuijper, uitgever van het vakblad Control en mede verantwoordelijk voor het sprekerprogramma van het NLGD Festival of Games.

De voorzitter van de Sti chting Nederlandse Gamedagen, de organisatie achter het festival, Seth van der Meer: “Het presenteren van David Perry als keynote spreker geeft aan dat we het congres naar een hoger plan tillen. Toonaangevende technieken die van groot belang zijn voor iedereen in de gamesindustrie geven we een prominente plek op het congres.”

Niet alleen de toekomst, ook successen uit het verleden vormen een belangrijk onderdeel van het congres. Control-hoofdredacteur en mede-programmeur Eric Bartelson: “Zo is al bekend dat Ian Livingstone het verhaal over het succes achter Eidos en de Tomb Raider-serie komt vertellen, maar we hebben nog een naam in de pijplijn. De maker van een wereldberoemde game die een inspiratie is voor tal van developers. Waarschijnlijk kunnen we hem volgende week bekend maken.”

Het Festival of Games bestaat uit een mix van diverse games-gerelateerde events en richt zich op ontwikkelaars, uitgevers en in vesteerders in de gamesindustrie. Naast het congres is er een internationaal matchmaking evenement, een expo, een carrière beurs en een projectenmarkt waar aanstormend talent zijn kunsten vertoont.

Voor het programma van het congres wordt dit jaar samengewerkt met Control, het vakblad voor de gamesindustrie.

Het Festival of Games vindt plaats op 3 en 4 juni in de Jaarbeurs in Utrecht.
