DSi hardware sales remain buoyant in Japan

Sales of Dragon Quest IX continue to contribute to Nintendo's handheld chart success

Dragon Quest IX software sales in Japan dropped off this week after the game sold a massive 2.3 million at retail during its launch week. But not to an insignificant number. 613,000 units were sold, and that figure continued to make a positive impact on DSi sales in the Japanese hardware chart this week, which totalled 96,986 units.

The figure is a drop on last week, when Nintendo sold 118,202 DSi consoles, but still puts the handheld above its nearest rival, PlayStation Portable, by a considerable margin.

Numbers of PlayStation Portable consoles sold last week totalled 24,053, which is a small drop on the previous week, according to the latest Media Create figures.

Wii sales remain strong and put the console in third position in the chart, and the DS Lite continues to just outsell PlayStation 3, selling 9932 units compared to the PS3's 8865.

The full Media Create hardware chart for the period July 13-19 is as follows:

  • 01 Nintendo DSi: 96,986
  • 02 PlayStation Portable: 24,053
