DS Lite flies off North American shelves

The DS Lite, the smaller, lighter and brighter version of Nintendo's original dual screen handheld, is proving just as popular as its predecessor in the US - where more than 135,000 units have been sold in just two days.

The redesigned handheld officially went on sale on Sunday, although some retailers reportedly began selling a day early, priced at USD 129.99. According to Nintendo, 136,500 units flew off the shelves in the two days following launch, putting the DS Lite on track to match the original DS with sales of half a million in the first 10 days.

The question still remains as to whether the Lite will push Nintendo ahead of Sony in the battle of the handhelds. Although the DS outsells the PSP in Japan by a huge margin, it's a close-run race in North America.

DS sales are likely to receive a further boost from sales of Brain Age and New Super Mario Bros. Nintendo reports that the new Mario title has sold at a constant rate of one copy every four seconds since the game went on sale on May 15th.

The DS Lite will launch in Europe on June 23rd, priced at EURO 149.99 / GBP 99.99.
