Dare to be Digital winners announced

Students win cash prizes and BAFTA nominations after Edinburgh Fringe event

The three winners for the videogame design competition Dare to be Digital have been announced at the Dare ProtoPlay event, with the trio becoming the sole nominees for the BAFTA Ones to Watch award category.

The three winners, from a shortlist of 15 titles, were Mush from Angry Mango, Sculpty from Team Tickle and Twang! From That Game Studio.

Dare to be Digital is organised by the University of Abertay Dundee and attracts students from across the world for its annual events. Each team is give 10 weeks to complete a prototype, before judging commences at the ProtoPlay showcase at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The three winning teams will each receive a £2,500 cash prize, in addition to the BAFTA nominations. They were judged by a team of industry veterans including Charles Cecil, Gareth Edmonson from Ubisoft and representatives from BBC, Blitz Games Studios, Codemasters, Denki, Develop, Rare, Realtime Worlds, Rockstar North and Sony.

For the first time a collaboration with Turner Broadcasting has also resulted in the new Adult Swim award, which was awarded to Bears with Jetpacks for the game Grrr!

The Teams Choice prize, chosen by the students themselves, went to Bazooka Duck for the game Epoch Defence.

Epoch Defence was also awarded the Intel Visual Adrenaline prize, while Twang! won the audience award voted on by members of the public.

"The quality of this year's entries is exceptionally high. It was our opinion that the winning projects, as well as some that came close, could have considerable commercial potential – an amazing achievement given that the students only had 10 weeks in which to write the project," said Cecil.
