Colao comes back to Vodafone

Former exec appointed Euro boss

Vodafone has appointed Vittorio Colao, a former company executive, as CEO of its European arm.

The move follows the departure of Bill Morrow, who left the firm in July citing personal reasons. Colao will also take over as chief executive of the Vodafone group - a role previously held by Sir Julian Horn-Smith, who retired earlier this year.

Colao was previously head of Vodafone Italy and regional boss for southern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He left the company in July 2004 to join RCS Mediagroup, where he remained in the role of chief executive for two years.

Vodafone's group chief executive, Arun Sarin, welcomed Colao's appointment, stating, "Vittorio made an outstanding contribution in his previous roles at Vodafone.

"We have a number of major challenges and opportunities in our European region and I am confident that, given his background and experience, Vittorio is well-equipped to succeed in this key position."

Colao will begin his new role on October 9.
