The installed base for Nintendo's Wii console has hit more than 14.2 million units in Europe.
According to the company, the system sold a further 8.3 million units across Europe in 2008, a 58 per cent rise from 2007 and the largest annual sales of home consoles in European history.
Nintendo's DS continues to break records, selling over 11.2 million units in 2008, the largest annual sales of any console in European history, bringing the total installed base for the system to over 31 million.
"The sales trend on both Wii and Nintendo DS, hardware and software during 2008 shows that more and more people in Europe are enjoying videogames as part of their daily lives," commented Laurent Fischer, managing director of marketing and PR for Nintendo Europe.
"This proves that Nintendo’s wish to expand the gaming population has strong potential in Europe."
Earlier this week, data from GfK Chart Track showed that the Wii sold 2.9 million units in the UK alone during 2008, bringing the installed base in the region to 4.9 million.
