2012: The Year Ahead in Tech

Digital Foundry on a year where triple-A gaming is in transition and how mobile technology continues to explode

We're entering uncharted territory in 2012: the beginning of the end of the current console generation, and a time of transition for both home and mobile hardware. By the end of this year we will have seen new console launches from Sony and Nintendo, another revelatory increase in the power of tablet and smartphone devices and the last big hurrah from game-makers looking to extract the last drops of performance from the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

First up, let's take a look at the new launches. We've already championed the cause of the PlayStation Vita - Sony's brand new handheld device, coming in February. Already available in Japan, its poor week two sales have already prompted some to write-off the console's chances, but the fact is that a launch dominated by western franchises was never going to result in record sales - especially when Nintendo has finally got its act together in terms of quality first party games for its cheaper 3DS. The fact that Japanese favourite - Monster Hunter - appeared on 3DS, not Vita, is another contributing factor to the Vita's sales shortfall.

Despite that, Sony must surely be fairly satisfied with a Japanese launch where 80 per cent of the launch allocation sold through in less than two weeks, and Vita will most likely do better yet in the US and Europe where games likes Uncharted and WipEout command much more of a following. It's way too soon to write off the machine, and I can imagine it doing very well with core gamers, co-habiting and to an extent dove-tailing with the Android and iOS ecosystem. So long as PlayStation Suite delivers, it could well be the device to offer the best of both worlds - the traditional premium handheld gaming experience alongside the more bite-sized offerings of the mobile market.

From a technological standpoint, Vita is intriguing in that as the first major hardware launch from SCE since the departure of Ken Kutaragi, its hardware architecture is somewhat more conservative compared to previous efforts such as Cell, the Emotion Engine and even the custom PSP architecture. The combination of quad core PowerVR SGX543 and ARM Cortex A9 processors in a single SoC (system on chip) is entirely consistent with the development of mobile technology in general: it would be no surprise at all if Apple were to use the exact same components in its forthcoming A6 chip for iPhone 5 and iPad 3 due later this year. Sony will be relying on Vita's fixed hardware platform and the ability for devs to code directly "to the metal" for it to retain its technological edge, even when other mobile devices eventually overcome it in terms of sheer horsepower.

What interests me most about this decision to opt for more conventional hardware is that it may well have some bearing on Sony's future plans for its PlayStation 3 successor. The choice of Cell for PlayStation 3 paid off for the platform holder's internal studios, who have crafted some of the most technologically advanced games of the current gen era, but it's safe to say that Cell hasn't really paid off for multi-platform developers, with the computational power of the SPUs often used to replicate functions typically carried out on the graphics cores on PC and Xbox 360 - anti-aliasing and post-processing effects for example. With DirectX 11 so strongly positioned to dominate the next-gen landscape and the offloading of CPU tasks to GPU via DirectCompute (rather than vice-versa as we see with PS3), there's a strong argument for Sony's strategy for more conventional hardware to be extended towards its next console even if that comes at the expense of backwards compatibility with the existing catalogue of PS3 titles.

Nintendo faces an interesting challenge with the launch of Wii U later this year. What's remarkable about the console is just how little we know about its technical innards months after its initial debut at E3 2011. What we do know is that IBM is providing the CPU, while AMD offers up the graphics core. Simply through the efficiencies gained in these technologies over the past five to six years, we can expect Wii U to either be faster or cheaper to produce than the equivalent chips in the PS3 and 360 yet rumours persist that the spec has still yet to be finalised, and that the prototypes sent out to developers have exhibited heat issues. The compact form factor of the Wii U along with confirmation that the CPU at least runs on a 45nm process (just like PS3) suggests that Nintendo's console is of the same generation as the current Sony and Microsoft platforms, and that the innovation is in the wireless tablet controller.

Wii U specs strongly suggest that the console has been tailored to a multi-platform environment, but it remains to be seen how much - if at all - it exceeds the capabilities of the 360 and PS3, and how it stands to compete against forthcoming next-gen platforms. While we can see the tablet forming an integral part of Nintendo's game concepts, the question must be raised of just how much we can expect to see multi-platform developers utilising it: platform-exclusive hardware in a multi-console environment is rarely utilised to anything like its potential by anyone other than the first party developers.

Nintendo's bet on the controller rather than the core processing hardware suggests that it believes that raw power and quality of visuals are not the defining factor of next-gen gaming, or else that it wants to handle the transition to HD gaming by carving out its own path - an interesting gamble in the light of titles such as Battlefield 3, an excellent game on console, but a whole different ballgame on PC.

Certainly, the distinct trend for 2012 we're picking up from developers is that multi-platform engines are now being designed with next-gen at least partly in mind. EA is in full transition mode with the deployment of its Frostbite 2 technology: Battlefield 3 and Need for Speed: The Run have already shipped, the new Command and Conquer uses DICE's engine and there are a number of rumours circulating suggesting that other tentpole franchises will be based upon the tech.

'Next-gen' Smart TVs will bring internet - and gaming - to flatpanel screens with offshoots of smartphone processing technology at their core. Will this be the next big iOS product?

It all makes sense. Rumours strongly suggest that the next-generation Xbox will get its debut at E3 this year and roll-out towards the end of 2013. But release dates can shift and of course, we still have no real idea when Sony intends to release its next PlayStation. In theory, next-gen titles need to be in development now, but may still need to be viable for current generation platforms.

Technologies like Frostbite 2 make this possible, but it's not just EA following this strategy. Gamasutra's intriguing interview with Bungie's Hao Chen strongly hints that the company's first multi-platform console title uses similar architectural principles to those used by DICE. Chen reveals that the engine the company used so successfully for Halo: Reach has been significantly re-engineered for its cross-platform debut and even without detailed next-gen specs, general trends in hardware development - not least the rise of DirectX 11 - offer developers more than enough clues on where their resources should be allocated.

"The other challenge is to have a good architecture for multi-threaded, multi-core designs that allow us to distribute work across different hardware threads, and have as many things execute in parallel as possible. We found out that even for Xbox 360, we were grossly under-utilising the CPU, mostly due to our multi-threading design that doesn't allow us to spread the work and execute them in parallel. So we re-did the whole architecture in the new engine," he says.

"An even bigger challenge is to future-proof the engine so when the next generation of consoles is here, we are already pretty good at squeezing the performance out of it. For example, we want the ability to have a particle system to run on the GPU for the 360, SPU on the PS3, and compute shaders on the future hardware, and this requires good design up front."

So the template for cutting-edge console development seems set then - the use of new techniques to draw out the last vestiges of performance from the likes of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, hitting the floor running with Wii U and utilising PC for laying the groundwork for next year's new hardware. In short, expect this year to carry on exactly where the last left off - however, I strongly suspect that CES will offer up a surprise or two and may well signal a new frontier for gaming.

Reports over Christmas re-ignited the rumours that Apple is looking to expand its range of hardware by branching out into TV territory, launching its own range of displays. This would be an interesting, not to mention ambitious resolution to a question I posed in last year's In Theory: Will Apple Launch a Home Games Console?. Why bother with a set-top box when it can be integrated into a brand new screen? Samsung has already made headway into this arena with its Smart TVs, where internet and TV are blended into one single product - so why not add gaming to the mix too?

"I'd like to create an integrated television set that is completely easy to use," Steve Jobs wrote in his autobiography. "It would be seamlessly synched with all of your devices and with iCloud. It will have the simplest user interface you could imagine."

While Apple is likely to stick to its own venues for massive product launches, hopefully CES will reveal other CE manufacturers' plans to bring gaming to 'next-gen' flatpanels. It makes sense to repurpose smartphone tech into displays and for games support to follow - the recent arrival of gamepad support for Samsung Smart TVs is surely a precursor to the migration of iOS and Android from mobile devices into the living room, while the arrival of the brilliant £15 Raspberry Pi demonstrates how a different branch of the same technology has the potential to revolutionise the teaching of computer sciences and re-invigorate homebrew coding.

For some, 2012 will be a frustrating year. There's been some debate that last year saw plenty of technological refinement but few new ideas and the maturation of the current gen console cycle played its part in that. It's difficult to believe that this year will be much different overall - even with the arrival of potentially brilliant titles such as GTA5, The Last Guardian, The Last of Us, Halo 4, BioShock Infinite and - we'd hope - a new game from the God of War team, amongst many others. But this year's E3 should help define what we can expect from the next-gen consoles and we'll get a better look at Wii U - however, the real tech stories of the year may well be outside of traditional "triple A" territory. Mobile has exploded over the last couple of years - 2012 may well see the same technology begin to take on the consoles on their home turf...

Richard, can I get you to elaborate on how the "compact form factor of the Wii U along with confirmation that the CPU at least runs on a 45nm process (just like PS3) suggests that Nintendo's console is of the same generation as the current Sony and Microsoft platforms"?

An Intel Atom processor and an IBM Power7 CPU (expected to be the Wii U CPU - or perhaps an A2 IBM chip) can both be of the 45 nm fabrication process but are hardly the same generation in terms of performance. And the case and cooling systems are not final (as noted by the heat dissipation issues). The GPU being rumored is from the AMD Radeon R700 series which is a couple of generations ahead of the GPU's used in the PS3 and X360. And again, that's just a rumor. That may have just been early dev kits for all we know.

Again, I'm just curious how you draw your conclusion based on those 2 factors you mentioned in the article.

This might easily become a wasted year in terms of hardware. The 3DS will continue to create headaches and maybe get flattened considerably. The Vita screen is tiny with a lower resolution than the tablet competition. Its biggest advantage of having proper buttons is undermined by the marketing focus on the touchscreen, which is still tiny compared to tablets. The tablets will come in FullHD but struggle with joypad connections and games supporting that. The WiiU controller is a $125 accident waiting to traumatize kids worldwide. AppleTV is directly attacking all the current consoles' integrated services, pushing them back towards being pure gaming devices. Onlive and Gaikai could undermine the mainstream positioning of the big three console manufacturers. The $25 RaspberryPI might turn into the hottest gaming property of all times should any country really decide to adapt these things for their schoolsystem and give one to every child.

Well, 2012 will be the year that will perhaps define or be the beginning of the end of the consoles that we know or used to know of today though the last 25 years or so.

I hope that Nintendo's long tradition of gaming does not end with the Wii U, but I still have faith that Nintendo will still continue to adapt even if the Wii U is not as successful as the original Wii or NES was.
