German retailer to pull violent games

Shooting prompts Galeria Kaufhof to refuse to stock mature titles

German retail chain Galeria Kaufhof will pull violent videogames and films from its shelves in response to a school shooting last week.

Starting April, Kaufhof will no longer stock films or games marked with an 18-plus rating, the country's highest age limit, according to Reuters

"I think [Kaufhof's decision] is a complete overreaction ... it borders on impulsive hysteria," said Stephan Reichart, managing director at the German videogame developers association G.A.M.E.

"It would be sufficient if retailers made sure their cashiers don't sell this material to young people."

Videogames drew in criticism for prompting the school shooting, which claimed 16 lives, when it was revealed the 17-year-old shooter was a Counter-Strike player.

Is it really too much for people to understand that correlation doesn't imply causation? It's not a difficult concept.

The sad thing is, it is a difficult concept for some people who don't have any association with videogames. You blame what you don't know/understand, and no matter how frustrating or wrong it might be, it's human nature.

Unless something scientific comes along that can prove causality in time, my hope is that knee-jerk reactions like this will recede on a generational basis.

Bryan, that would involve own objective thinking, something you can'T honestly demand from the mainstream heard just listening to what their media shepperds present them with.

Hell, I honestly beleive, that all of the culprits, who performed school schootings in Germany have eaten at McDonalds and have had a Coca-Cola at some point in their live.
But who would come to the conclusion, that having fast food or consuming brown sugar-laden non-alcoholic beverages have something to do with that?

This is just a marketing skit that Kaufhof is pulling to get more customers into their markets again by means of a popularity factor.

It is a cheap, random hit at the industry which is blamed by the media for violent crimes.

Btw: It took the German media exactly 13 hours to report for the first time, that the kid had "them typical violent games" ("Killerspiele") on his PC.

Edit @Phil:
"Unless something scientific comes along that can prove causality in time, my hope is that knee-jerk reactions like this will recede on a generational basis."
Actually it seems like it does...the uproar of the younger generation (35 years and under) was quite loud, when the media put the games to blame again. And it seems to get louder everytime.

Ignorance begets the innocent scapegoat. Irrational fear overrides logic with a force unmeasurable. Our intelligence unraveled for want of no accountability.

Sorry, Maccallan single malt scotch gets me philosophic.
