Atari ships 2.5 million units of Driv3r

Publisher Atari has announced that it has shipped 2.5 million units of Driv3r for the launch of the title this week, as analysts and retailers made largely strong predictions for the title, which is considered to be vital to Atari's future success.

The game - which is being launched on PS2 and Xbox, with a PC version to follow in September - has been launched in North America, Europe and Australia, and the 2.5 million unit figure covers both platforms in all three territories.

Although the game has had a mixed response from reviewers - with most scores being at the lower end of the scale, while extremely high scores in certain publications have sparked off a debate over the impartiality of reviewers - analysts and retailers seem largely positive about the title.

Electronics Boutique in the USA has predicted that it will be one of the top three sellers for June, while several market commentators have expressed hope that it will help to pick up the US games market after a slightly disappointing month in May.

Here in the UK, the game entered the software sales charts at number six last week after a large number of retailers broke the street date for the title almost a week early.
