Horizon: Forbidden West is the second biggest PS5 launch so far | UK Boxed Charts

Almost a third of sales were for the PS4 version

Horizon: Forbidden West was comfortably the No.1 game in the UK boxed charts, according to the latest GfK figures.

The game is the second biggest PS5 launch so far, behind popular launch game Spider-Man: Miles Morales and just ahead of FIFA 22. Like Spider-Man, the new Horizon was released on both PS4 and PS5. 68% of the boxed sales were on PS5 with the remainder on the older PlayStation.

Forbidden West's launch sales are down 35% compared with its predecessor: 2017's Horizon: Zero Dawn. However, this data does not factor in digital sales, and the download market has accelerated significantly in the last five years. Digital download data will be released later in the week.

Considering the lack of availability of PS5 consoles, we might expect Horizon to rise up and down the charts as more machines become available.

It means that Pokemon Legends: Arceus falls to No.2 (sales down 52% week-on-week). The Nintendo Switch game was No.1 for three consecutive weeks and is still the fastest-selling game of the year.

The release of Horizon coincided with more PS5 consoles coming to stores, which has resulted in other PS5 games rising up the charts. Spider-Man: Miles Morales is up 15 places to No.12 after a 90% sales rise week-on-week. Meanwhile, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart re-enters the charts at No.20.

Just behind Ratchet & Clank is Assassin's Creed: The Ezio Collection, which jumps back into the charts at No.21 following the release of the Nintendo Switch version of the pack.

Elsewhere, a new update to Cyberpunk 2077 means that the game is now enhanced for PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. As a result, the CD Projekt title rose 271% in sales week-on-week and re-enters the charts at No.23.

The one other new game in the charts is King of Fighters XV at No.30. The SNK title sold best on PS5, accounting for 53% of sales, with 25% on PS4 and 23% on Xbox.

Sony must be rubbing their hands with glee over 68% of physical sales being the PS5 version. Let's not forget it doesn't matter which version you buy physically you will get the ps5 version included. Sony's utter incompetence in the upgrade route to PS5 would be laughable if it wasn't costly customers money.
