Nintendo to stop Wii U and 3DS eShop purchases in 2023

From March next year, users will no longer be able to buy digital games on those systems

Nintendo has announced that Wii U and 3DS players will no longer be able to purchase games on the eShop after March 2023.

This includes free content and game demos as well as premium titles.

While new games won't be purchasable after that date, games that a user already owns can be redownloaded onto those systems, and said content will still receive updates.

"This is part of the natural life cycle for any product line as it becomes less used by consumers over time," the company said. "We are providing this notice more than a year in advance of the end of purchases so users will have plenty of time to prepare."

The firm also recently unveiled that the Switch has sold 103.5 million units since its 2017 launch, surpassing the 101.6 million Wii consoles sold.

However, the Switch is yet to sell more units than the original Nintendo DS, which sold 154 million units over its lifetime.
