Chris Pratt cast as Mario in animated adaptation dated for Holiday 2022

Charlie Day will be Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy joins as Peach and Jack Black will voice Bowser

Nintendo has announced the cast of its upcoming Super Mario Bros animated adaptation, with Parks and Recreation and Guardians of the Galaxy's Chris Pratt taking the titular role.

Luigi will be voiced by It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's Charlie Day, while Anya Taylor-Joy, recently seen in The Queen's Gambit, will be Princess Peach.

Bowser will be portrayed by Jack Black, Seth Rogan will join as Donkey Kong, Toad will be voiced by Keegan-Michael Key, Fred Armisen will take the role of Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson has been chosen to be Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco will be Spike.

Mario's original voice, Charles Martinet, will also be present in the animated film in the form of cameos, Nintendo announced.

The platform holder also gave the film a release window: Holiday 2022, with the US launch specifically set for December 21, 2022.

These announcements were part of last night's Nintendo Direct, with the company also unveiling a new tier of Switch Online membership, alongside a selection of Nintendo 64 and Sega Mega Drive games.

The Mario adaptation is being done in partnership with Illumination, and was announced back in 2018. Earlier this year, Nintendo appointed the animation company's studio head, Chris Meledandri, to its board of directors.
