Facebook acquires Sanzaru Games

Studio behind Asgard's Wrath to join Oculus Studios and continue VR development

Facebook has acquired Asgard's Wrath developer Sanzaru Games for an undisclosed amount.

Sanzaru will remain an independently operated studio, joining Facebook's Oculus Studios in a move similar to the company's acquisition of Beat Games last November.

In a blog post, Facebook director of content Mike Verdu praised Sanzaru's previous work in VR, with the developer having made a total of four titles for Oculus since 2016. Verdu declined to speak about Sanzaru's future projects, and added that the "vast majority" of Sanzaru employees would be joining Oculus Studios.

An unknown number of employees will depart the company with the transition, as their employment was contingent on certain projects at Sanzaru. Facebook declined to comment on how many Sanzaru employees would not be joining Oculus Studios.

The California-headquartered studio was founded in 2007, and has a total of three offices across California and Ontario. Alongside its VR catalog, it has worked on games including Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal, and Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice.
