The Last of Us Part II delayed to May 29

Sony pushes post-apocalyptic sequel back three months to polish the game to Naughty Dog's standards

Update: The Last of Us Party II has been delayed and will now release on May 29, 2020. The news was confirmed by game director Neil Druckmann in a post on the PlayStation Blog.

"It was during the last few weeks, as we were closing out sections of the game, that we realized we simply didn't have enough time to bring the entire game up to a level of polish we would call Naughty Dog quality," Druckmann explained. "At this point we were faced with two options: compromise parts of the game or get more time. We went with the latter, and this new release date allows us to finish everything to our level of satisfaction while also reducing stress on the team.

"While we're relieved that we won't have to compromise our vision, we're disappointed that we weren't able to avoid this exact situation. We wish we could've foreseen the amount of polish we needed, but the size and scope of this game got the better of us. We hate disappointing our fans and for that we're sorry."

Original story: It's barely been a month since Sony announced The Last of Us Part II would launch on February 21, but Kotaku is reporting that Sony is expected to officially delay the Naughty Dog sequel this week.

Kotaku cites "two people familiar with goings-on at Naughty Dog" for the news, saying the game will instead launch in the spring of 2020.

The story's author, Jason Schreier, added on Twitter that another Sony exclusive, Ghost of Tsushima, will also be pushed back to space out launches. It didn't have an official release date, but Schreier said Ghost of Tsushima had been planned for the first half of 2020 and will now arrive later.

A Sony representative did not immediately return our request for comment.
