Amazon Game Studios partners with Leyou on Lord of the Rings MMO

Licensed F2P title will be set in Middle-earth, planned for release on PC and consoles

Amazon Game Studios has revealed that it is the formerly-secret development partner working with Leyou Technologies' publishing label, Athlon Games, on a Lord of the Rings licensed title.

The game was first revealed late last year as a close collaboration with Middle-earth Enterprises. Athlon Games, headed by WB Games and Codemasters veteran Dave Miller, will be publishing the title.

Amazon Game Studios will be developing the game with the same team behind New World taking the lead, but using teams from across its locations in Seattle, Irvine, and San Diego. The teams include former developers from games such as Everquest, Destiny, Planetside, World of Warcraft, Defiance, and Rift.

The game is planned as a free-to-play MMO that will be released on PC and console, though no specific launch window has yet been given.

Last month, Amazon Game Studios reportedly laid off "dozens" as it canceled multiple unannounced projects to prioritize New World and Crucible, as well as other upcoming titles including the Lord of the Rings project.
