Nintendo Switch sales pass PS4 in Japan

But it is off the pace of DS and 3DS

The latest figures from Famitsu reveal that Nintendo Switch has now surpassed PS4 in Japan.

The data firm says that 8.13 million Nintendo Switch consoles have been sold in the market, whereas PS4 has sold 8.07 million. This is despite the console being on sale for only two years, compared with PS4's five years.

Worldwide Nintendo Switch sales currently sit at 35 million, whereas PS4 sales are approach 92 million.

Japan is a strong portable market, so it is unsurprising that Switch has performed so strongly. Nevertheless, sales have actually been lower during its first two years on the market compared with Nintendo DS and 3DS. According to Nintendo's latest financial presentation, the 3DS was approaching 10 million sales two years after launch, while the DS was approaching 16 million.

In the US, Switch has outpaced both DS and 3DS, but lags behind Wii. Meanwhile in Europe, Switch is behind DS and Wii but ahead of 3DS.
