Sony pulls full game download codes from all stores

PlayStation confirms to GamesIndustry.biz new strategy starts April 1, cards for DLC and virtual currency will still be available

Sony Interactive Entertainment will no longer be selling digital versions of full games via physical retail, as of next month.

Reports first emerged that the platform holder was pulling full game download codes when a Twitter user Wario64 shared a memo reportedly issued to GameStop staff detailing the change.

According to the memo, digital games will only be purchasable via the PlayStation Store after April 1, although retailers like GameStop will still be able to sell cards for add-on content and virtual currency.

Responding to a request from GamesIndustry.biz, a Sony Interactive Entertainment spokesperson said: "I can confirm that as of April 1, 2019, we will no longer be offering full games through SIE's Global Digital at Retail program. The decision was made in in order to align key businesses globally.

"To support full games and premium editions, SIE will introduce increased denominations at select retailers. DLC, add-ons, virtual currency, and season passes will still be available."

The shared memo says any codes already on shelves are expected to be deactivated by the end of the month, with customers who pre-ordered a digital code via GameStop encouraged to switch to a physical version of the game.

It also claims there will be two exceptions -- Days Gone and Mortal Kombat 11 -- presumably as these are too close to launch to cancel.

This is solely a Sony decision. Nintendo and Microsoft will continue selling full download titles through bricks and mortar stores.
