Apex Legends hits 50 million players

Respawn's free-to-play battle royale game passes milestone in its first month of release

Apex Legends continues to hurdle user milestones in impressive fashion. Today the official Twitter account for Respawn Entertainment's free-to-play battle royale shooter announced that it has passed 50 million players since its launch exactly one month ago.

Launched immediately after it was announced, Apex Legends created instant buzz, welcoming more than 1 million players in its first eight hours. It only took three days to bring in 10 million players, and topped 25 million after its first week of availability.

"Thank you to the 50 million players that have shown up in the first month since Apex Legends launched," Respawn CEO Vince Zampella said on Twitter. "You have all made this something special and there's much more to come!"

While those numbers show the game's explosive growth rate has actually slowed since its first week, it still compares favorably to the initial performance of the reigning battle royale phenomenon, Fortnite. Epic's game took two weeks to bring in 10 million players upon its launch in 2017, and two and a half months to reach 30 million. Last November, Epic confirmed Fortnite's user base had surpassed 200 million registered players.

Is it too early to call games without a Battle Royale mode dead, in the same way single player games are 'dead'? Even Factorio supports 100+ player Battle Royale, so I guess it is time to put 100 players into everything. Wait, when did I hear that before?
