Fox21 adapting Dontnod's Vampyr for TV

Series based on video game will be produced by same company behind upcoming Life Is Strange TV show

Dontnod Entertainment has granted the rights to create a TV series based on Vampyr to Fox 21.

The 20th Century Fox subsidiary has announced DJ2 Entertainment will adapt the supernatural adventure for TV - the same firm that is already working with Dontnod on a live-action adaptation of Life Is Strange. Wonderland Sound & Vision will also work on the project.

Published by Focus Home Interactive earlier this year, Vampyr is a dark adventure game where players take on the role of a doctor who is turned into a vampire. As the story progresses, players need to balance their thirst for blood with the doctor's Hippocratic Oath never to harm a soul.

It was a critical and commercial success, topping the charts in multiple countries (including the UK) and shifting more than 450,000 copies in its first month.

Dontnod CEO Oskar Guilbert believes the game is "a fantastic premise for a television show" and that the series will be "a new and exciting way for fans of the game, as well as the uninitiated, to enter and engage with Vampyr's rich, deep story."

"We cannot wait to see how the talented team at FOX21 will bring out the darkly atmospheric universe of our game into television," he added.

DJ2 CEO Dmitri Johnson said: "The DJ2 team loves the creative vision Dontnod and Focus devote to all of their projects. The great relationship we've built with them since partnering on their incredible game, Life Is Strange, allowed us to get on board for Vampyr well before its release. Like them, we're excited to collaborate with our friends at Fox21, Wonderland, and the rest of the creative team we're assembling."

The move fits in with Dontnod's ongoing ambitions to bring its IP to a multitude of media. There is already a Life Is Strange comic series, and Bandai Namco told GamesIndustry.biz they hope to make Dontnod's upcoming title Twin Mirror into a movie.

Speaking to us at E3, Guilbert said: "We are creating universes for each game: Life is Strange, Vampyr, Twin Mirror. It's natural to think about movies, TV series, comic books for each of the IPs we create"
