Steam services expand to mobile with new apps

Steam Link and Steam Video will launch in the coming months

Valve announced yesterday that it will launch two new Steam apps in the coming months to extend its services to mobile. Both apps will be free and will connect with existing Steam libraries and services.

The first app, Steam Link, is planned for a May 21 launch and will allow users to play Steam games on their mobile devices. The app works similarly to how the current Steam Link device operates to play Steam games on a TV.

The mobile device must be connected to a 5Ghz network or wired Ethernet that also has a Steam host system, such as a PC, connected and running. It then streams the game from the host system to the device.

Initial support at launch will be for iOS devices including iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, with Android support launching in beta for a full release at a later date. Various controllers, including the Steam Controller, will also be supported.

The second app, Steam Video, allows for both offline play and online streaming of all movies and shows currently available on Steam. Steam Video will launch at an unspecified date this summer.
