Fortnite earned $223 million in March - Superdata

Research firm calls Epic Games survival shooter "the largest free-to-play console game of all time" in revenue generated and monthly users

The Fortnite: Battle Royale phenomenon continues to roll. According to research firm Superdata, Epic Games' free-to-play survival shooter is now the largest free-to-play console game of all time in terms of revenue generated and monthly active users.

In its March digital games report, Superdata said that Fortnite generated $223 million across all platforms (console, PC, and mobile) during the month, making it the top grossing console game as far as digital revenues go, and the fifth highest grossing PC game. That total is up 73% over February's total.

Just behind Fortnite on the console chart was Far Cry 5, with Superdata estimating the Ubisoft open-world action game sold 2.5 million units digitally across all platforms. The console launch in particular was nearly six times as large as that of Far Cry Primal two years earlier.

Overall, worldwide digital gaming revenues for March grew by about 2% to $8.9 billion, with the console market driving the growth and making up for modest downturns in free-to-play PC and social game revenues.
