Hellblade leads with nine nominations at this year's BAFTAs

Horizon Zero Dawn a close second with eight, followed by What Remains of Edith Finch with seven

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice - from Cambridge-based independent studio Ninja Theory - has swept this year's BAFTA nominations, appearing in over half of the 16 categories.

A total of 45 games have been recognised but Hellblade picked up the most, being nominated nine times across Artistic Achievement, Audio Achievement, Best Game, British Game, Game Innovation, Music, Narrative, Performer, and new category Game Beyond Entertainment.

Following closely is Horizon Zero Dawn with eight nominations including Artistic Achievement, Best Game, and Original Property. Meanwhile, What Remains of Edith Finch received seven nominations from Best Game to Original Property.

Introduced this year to recognise games that deliver a "transformational experience", the Games Beyond Entertainment category features titles that explore a range of social issues. Nominees include the Life is Strange: Beyond the Storm, Night in the Woods, Bury me, my Love, Last Day of June, Hellblade, and Sero Hero Quest VR.

This year's nominations include an eclectic array of titles that demonstrate the variety of first-class experiences released in 2017. Along with the more predictable big budget entries such as Call of Duty: World War II, Assassins Creed Origins, and Wolfenstein: New Colossus, more left-field nominees include Gang Beasts, Reigns: Her Majesty, and Slime Rancher.

The ceremony, hosted by Dara O'Briain, will take place on April 12 at Troxy, London. The full list of nominations can be found here.
