Mafia III developer Hangar 13 hit by redundancies

Cutbacks "to ensure that the studio's resources are properly aligned with its long-term development plans," says publisher 2K games

American developer Hanger 13 has laid off an undisclosed number of staff, publisher 2K Games has confirmed.

The Mafia III developer has two sites in the Czech Republic and another in California. It is currently unknown if the redundancies are company-wide or whether all three offices will remain open.

The publisher has yet to confirm how many staff have been laid off, but as Kotaku reports, it is suspected to be a "significant number". GamesIndustry.biz has reached out to multiple people at 2K Games for further details and is awaiting response.

"2K can confirm that there have been staff reductions at Hangar 13 in order to ensure that the studio's resources are properly aligned with its long-term development plans," a company spokesperson told Kotaku.

"These reductions will not influence 2K's ability to create and deliver its products that are currently in development. We never take these matters lightly, and are working with the affected employees to support them and explore potential opportunities throughout our organisation."

Mafia III, Hanger 13's first and only game, shipped five million units as of early 2017.
