GameStop sells out of PS VR pre-orders... again
Second allotment sells out in 4 minutes
The demand for virtual reality is still high if the latest news from retailer GameStop is any indication. The company just sold of its second allotment of pre-order units for the PlayStation VR systems.
"The fact that this second allotment sold out in a matter of minutes demonstrates the customer anticipation and fervor for this exciting interactive technology," said Bob Puzon, senior vice president of merchandising at GameStop.
"We're working closely with Sony to get more PS VR units, and will let our customers know when they become available."
The $400 headset is due for release in October.
There are not going to be. A lot of units available they're trying to ramp up, but such things are very difficult so late in the game. Manufacturing takes a long time and to reserve a line, retool and start cranking units can get months by itself.
I believe I've said it before, but the question is not how many they will sell this Christmas, but what things look like in March, April, and next Christmas. This isn't a $150 Kinect here, it's a $500 addon if you don't have the camera and wands (which most people don't). its a factor of people being impressed and living up to expectations. When I was 6, they used to advertise this submarine for $6.98 (plus $0.75 shipping!) in comic books. My imagination went wild, and while my rational mind kept me from blowing that money, my fantasy mind was sure I was missing out.
The games are basically on rails, and the mass consumer doesn't want to play Among the Sleep. So like other new tech attached to hardware that can't handle it, when "Where's Call of Duty IW VR?" Pops up, they're not going to have an answer. $199 is really the threshold for these things. (Nintendo got another $50 with the white hit dad and the fact they included a great showcase game on wii). I seriously doubt the Neo has enough horses, and the Scorpio's alleged abilities are still coming in at Oculus minimums.
Console and goggles bundle needs to be $500. That's going to move units. We're at least 5 years away from that, and I'm worried that doing things so soon, will cause them to fail as the mainstream product needs to be,before they have a chance to prove their worth.
Also, the funny thing is PS Moves can be found online cheap (or they used to be cheap until people realized they're needed for VR). A friend stocked up on six sets last year for about $20 each from a shop that was closing and he bought two more sets recently. He's also picked up three cameras for some reason. No idea what he's planning to do with all those (he's not a reselling kind of guy), but he IS one of those "just in case..." people comfortable with his OCD (which is a bit like mine).
The one problem with stockpiling all those Moves is that you're going to have to be handy with your tools. Since Sony builds in their batteries, they get old and start failing to hold a charge even if you're not using them. Make sure he's aware and bones up on how to fix them so his score doesn't go to waste!
