Rolling Stone publisher launching gaming site

Wenner Media preps Glixel for October launch; newsletter starts this week

The parent company of Rolling Stone is launching its own video game website. The New York Times is reporting that Wenner Media is prepping its new site Glixel for an October launch, with a weekly newsletter launching today.

Gus Wenner, son of Rolling Stone co-founder Jann Wenner and head of digital at Wenner Media, explained to the paper why now was the right time for the company to test the gaming waters.

"In my mind, gaming is today what rock 'n' roll was when Rolling Stone was founded," Wenner said.

Wenner Media has tapped industry veteran John Davison as the site's general manager. Over a 30-year career, Davison has overseen editorial efforts for Electronic Gaming Monthly, Official PlayStation Magazine, GamePro, and GameSpot, among others. Former Ziff-Davis VP of content and creative director Simon Cox is also on board as the new site's content director.

The site will include the requisite assortment of features, interviews, reviews, and videos, with Davison saying, "We want to make it very much about the people - not just the people that make games, but the people that play them."
