Swery breaking from development due to health issues

"I've decided that I need to take a rest here, so that I can hopefully continue to make games in the future"

Hidetaka "Swery" Suehiro is taking a break from game development to aid his recovery from reactive hypoglycemia, a medical condition related to low blood-sugar levels.

Suehiro, who is best know for the idiosyncratic cult hit Deadly Premonition, made the announcement on his personal blog. He assured his fans that the break would be "short," though it is difficult to assess how long that might prove to be in the context of high-end game development.

"I'm already slow enough at making games as it is, and I feel like all I ever do is make my fans wait," Suehiro said. "But I've decided that I need to take a rest here, so that I can hopefully continue to make games in the future.

"When I recover from my illness, I'm going to do my best to make games that are better and more awesome than ever before!"

The last product released by Access Games, Suehiro's company, was D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die. When it launched in September 2014 it was an Xbox One exclusive, but a PC port arrived in June this year.

No official announcement has been made regarding D4's sales, but its more ardent fans certainly saw grounds for concern following its initial Xbox release. It was eventually given away for free as part of the Games With Gold promotion, after which Swery claimed that it had been played by more than one million people.
