Oculus launch still "many months" away, but not years

CEO Brendan Iribe says hardware is largely finalized for consumers, but input device still an issue

The consumer version of the Oculus Rift headset is mere months away from a consumer release. That's what Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe said in an appearance at Web Summit 2014 in Dublin, according to The Next Web.

"We're all hungry for it to happen," Iribe said. "We're getting very close. It's months, not years away, but many months... We've gone out there and set this bar and said, 'We want to get it right.' We don't want it to be four or five years. We're eager for this to happen."

While Iribe said the current Crescent Bay prototype of the hardware is "largely finalized for a consumer product," there's more work to do elsewhere. For example, he said the company has yet to settle on an ideal input device to go along with the headset. Iribe hasn't been satisfied with keyboards, mice, game pads, or gesture controls as a solution so far.

Oculus founder Palmer Luckey has previously said that if the headset isn't on sale by the end of 2015, "then we know there's a problem."

By stating "we want to get it right" basically makes talk of a timeframe pointless as you want to get it right without being pressured with time? right? RIGHT?

Well, it's nice and all to have the headset ready, but for the broader consumertarget there is another problem.. Yes It's nice the headset has great tracking, 2560x1440 screens (or higher) with 70-90fps, but the biggest problem is, even midrange PC's already have trouble pushing 1920x1080 (and then we're already talking about $200+ cards) on a high framerate with a lot of beautifull visuals (a nvidia GTX760 can't even do Battlefield 4 on ultra on 1680x1050 on 60fps), and the regular consumer doesn't have near that kind of a PC.. So in the end, the 'consumer' version will still only be interesting to the folks that are already busy with the DK2, and some highend gamers, but they will be bitching that it won't look as good as on their 4K screen..

You're assuming that all the latest AAA games with tons of visual fidelity will even support the rift.
It's more likely that most people will be playing indie-ish games on it, because porting smaller, less complex engines to work with the rift will be more feasible. Also, those won't need to reach such a huge market to be profitable.

I expect the rift to be a modder's and indie's plaything for the foreseeable future. Adjusting an experience to the Rift is no small task. Even a game that seems to be made for the rift from the ground up (like Alien:Isolation) can't really get it 100% right and doesn't officially support it.

DO NOT launch Oculus Rift without an accompanying "Wii Sports"-esque title. It needs a showcase piece of software that goes above and beyond validating its existence and it needs to come with the unit.

If this piece of software is not yet ready, Oculus Rift is not yet ready.
