Nintendo releasing pink 3DS to chase flagging sales

Female consumers slow to pick up console; 3D movie filming added to system

Nintendo is to release a pink version of the 3DS console in a bid to chase the female demographic and turn around flagging sales of the handheld console.

As well as a new coloured SKU, it will also increase functionality for the device with an overhauled eShop and Mii Plaza, and the ability to record 3D movies.

Speaking at the Tokyo Game Show this morning, president Satoru Iwata said that the adoption of the 3DS by female consumers is lagging behind both the Wii and DS, and to address this a 'misty pink' model will be released October 20

Last month Nintendo dropped the price of the console dramatically after the system flopped at retail, with the company slashing full-year profit forecasts by over 80 per cent.

Despite the heavy price cuts, full-year sales forecasts for the system are expected to be around 16 per cent short of targets according to Bloomberg.

The company also unveiled pricing for a second 3DS circle pad attachment today, which will cost 1500 ($19 / 12) when released in Japan December 10. Monster Hunter Tri G, Resident Evil: Revelations, Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater, Ace Combat 3D Cross Rumble, Dynasty Warriors Vs and Kingdom Hearts 3D will all use the peripheral.

3DS titles announced by Nintendo today included new Mario Tennis, Gundam and Fire Emblem games.
