3DS tops Japan charts again, but sales declining rapidly

Handheld sold 60,000 last week

The 3DS continues to see a sales resurgence in Japan, shifting over 60,000 units last week off the back of a recent price cut. It outsold its nearest competitors, the PS3 and PSP, by almost two to one.

However, last week's 3DS sales (as reported by Andriasang) are down from almost 200,000 units two weeks previously.

The slump is not Nintendo-specific, though - all formats appear to have suffered a decline in sales. The full hardware chart is as follows:

  1. 3DS: 60,781 (Last week: 105,639)
  2. PS3: 33,141 (29,666)
  3. PSP: 31,310 (40,888)
  4. Wii: 11,342 (18,256)
  5. DSi XL: 3235 (4329)

  8. Xbox 360: 1393 (1427)
  9. DS Lite: 110 (117)
  10. PSP go: 20 (13)

In software, Capcom's PS3 game Monster Hunter Portable 3rd topped the charts, while PSP titles dominated the top 20. Only two 3DS titles made the chart, with Nintendo's highest placement being Rhythm Heaven Wii at sixth.

We are moving into Japan's dead sales season. We'll have a couple of more big titles hit but for the most part hardware won't rebound until late November.

Is it time to retire the PSPgo and call it a failed but bold experiment?! I mean, 33 sales in the PSP's most successful region over the last fortnight has got to be saying something...

I am surprised to see sales of very old peripherals still occuring. For the 3DS i am curious why folks would continue to purchase it without a significant selection of 3ds games to play?
