Glitch developer Tiny Speck raises $11m

San Francisco studio uses funding to accelerate beta and increase head count

Social games developer Tiny Speck has announced that the company has raised $10.7 million in a Series B round of funding, which it intends to use to continue development on browser-based MMO Glitch.

The funding was led by existing backers Andreessen Horowitz and Accel and coincides with the beta for Glitch beginning next week.

"This new investment allows us to move even faster in creating a game-world like no other, to continue building the powerful tech infrastructure underneath it all, and to build out the services to support our ever growing player base," said company president Stewart Butterfield on the company's website.

The San Francisco-based company was founded by four of the original members of the Flickr team in 2009. Currently the company only has eight employees, plus associated artists from around the world.

Glitch is described as a "web-based massively-multiplayer game which takes place inside the minds of eleven peculiarly imaginative Giants. You choose how to grow and shape the world: building and developing, learning new skills, collaborating or competing with everyone else in one enormous, ever-changing, persistent world."
