Zynga considers franchise path

Brian Reynolds ponders the question of sequels in social networks' 'young' industry

Facebook games giant Zynga may opt to tread the franchise path in the future - although it doesn't currently feel pressure to do so, and feels that sequels could come as much as ten years after the original game was launched.

Those are the thoughts of chief creative officer Brian Reynolds, speaking to IndustryGamers.

"Well, it's so early in our industry, is it time to have sequels? I don't know," he said. "It sounds like something we might do.

"It's never too late to do a sequel, by the way," he added. "It's not like we need to be quickly running for the sequels because you can do sequels even ten years after the original game. The first Civilization sequel came out five years after the first one and the next one was five years after that. And we've only even been a company for three years."

Speculation as to the future course of Zynga has recently been in the news, with Webtrends VP Peter Yared writing on VentureBeat that the current strategy of releasing new simulation games with different settings may not be sustainable.

Being that these games aren't heavily story driven, I think it makes sense to take what you've learned and create something more fun from that.

Would a Farmville 2 replace the original, or would it stand alone? And how would they transition the player base?

Surely with an online title the whole concept of sequals is redundant? Like with World of Warcraft, you just evolve and expand the game continuously, and never have to make a clean break and start again.

Pssssh, every game using the same engine they do is just a sequel.

X-wars -> Mafia Wars -> Mafia Wars with FLASH and other elements cobbled together from all other crime games.
Farmville -> Farmville with more crap and quests (Frontierville) -> Farmville with Sim City

You gotta be kidding me a sequel to something like FarmVille? All the ideas they can come up with sequeezing more money out of people can be updated and implemented into the current FarmVille I doubt they are going to go 3D using Unreal Engine 3. Ahhh sorry I forgot they can make people start all over again and force them to buy again the same items they already had to buy in the first one.

How the hell do you come out with a sequel to a game that technically isn't even out of 'beta'?
